In the computer industry at the moment, there are two main players (depending on who you ask) that have a large percentage of the computing pie.

Windows branded equipment has tended to rule the roost when it comes to commerce, gaming, finance/accounting etc.

Apple Mac has a large percentage of the market for DJ, music, professional design eg web design. video production etc.

Large parts of the Mac interface (in official jargon known as UI) are driven by a user-friendly classy looking graphical interface. But do you know that as of Mac OS X, they adopted some of the underpinnings of Linux. So you can do things in a text window for troubleshooting or just general up-keep.

This is shown in the window on the right.

Illustration #01

Refer to Illustration #01. This is a screenshot of a feature called Terminal. (It works in a similar manner to MS-DOS, but with a "Mac" dialect.

When Apple developed the software for OS 9, it became a more polished OS from the ones before it (inheriting traits from 1980's to 1990's models of Apple computer.

However, versions of Mac computers with OS X took a marked detour. Early versions  OS X stayed with PowerPC processor chip (designed by Motorola) but inherited tech specs from a "flavour" of Linux to compliment it.
The UI of Mac became a work of art. But what is shown below can be used to troubleshoot a Mac (at bootup) or Terminal (when logged on)
